Kuusamo Region is the economical centre of north-eastern Finland (Koillismaa) and an international nature tourism destination.
The city of Kuusamo and the municipality of Taivalkoski together form an economic area with c. 20 000 residents in the north-eastern part of Northern Ostrobothnia. The unique wilderness and diverse services of Kuusamo Region make it a fascinating year-round destination for travellers. The regional industry relies on tourism, wood processing, food production and the metal and information industry. The internationally growing Kuusamo Region is EU’s north-eastern gateway to Russia.
Kuusamo is a developing urban community with c. 15 000 residents and the viable business hub of Koillismaa. Kuusamo’s success as an international tourist destination and a centre for business activities is based on the attractiveness of the local wilderness and the sustainable use of its raw materials, in addition to the strong know-how of local companies in various different sectors. The majority of the companies in the region are small and medium-sized family businesses.
Taivalkoski is a municipality adjacent to Kuusamo, which represents the modern countryside of information services and the industry. Taivalkoski is known for its competence in forestry, and the secret to its success are its hard-working, responsible and cooperative residents, in addition to its extensive connections with various players in the industry. The Taivalkoski unit of Oulu Vocational College trains professionals in many different fields for the business sector.
